When sourcing mineral fiber ceiling boards for commercial interior distribution, buyers frequently encounter broad variations in weight, density, and price. The key factor behind these differences lies entirely in the manufacturing technology: Wet-Formed (Slurry) Process versus Dry-Formed (Felted) Process.
Understanding these two manufacturing methodologies allows factory owners and construction procurement managers to make smart capital decisions.
Wet-Formed Production Line (The Global Standard)
The vast majority of high-end commercial mineral fiber tiles (including standard 600x600mm panels) are produced via the Wet-Formed Slurry process:
The Process: Slag wool, organic fibers (recycled paper/cellulose), perlite, and starch binders are mixed with water to create a uniform slurry. This liquid mixture is poured onto a continuous moving forming wire, vacuum-dewatered, compressed, dried in massive multi-zone ovens, sanded, and surface-painted.
The Advantages: Wet-forming yields an exceptionally rigid, high-density core with superior impact resistance. It allows for precise edge machining (such as tegular or reveal edges) that will not crumble during shipping or grid installation.
Best Used For: Standard commercial suspension matrices where high anti-sag (RH95+), durability, and precise geometric fit are critical.
Dry-Formed Production Line (Soft Acoustic Boards)
The Process: Loose mineral wool or fiberglass is blown together with dry resin powders onto a conveyor, using compressed air instead of water. The dry mat is then hot-pressed instantly under heated rollers to cure the resin binders.
The Advantages: Dry-formed panels are ultra-lightweight and highly porous. Because of the loose, airy fiber matrix, they inherently possess superior Noise Reduction Coefficients (NRC up to 0.90), though they lack structural impact strength.
Best Used For: Recording studios, home cinemas, and high-end auditoriums requiring absolute echo cancellation, where tiles are rarely handled or exposed to structural impacts.
3 Critical Metrics for Evaluating a Supplier's Quality
1. Density Calibration: Low-quality wet-formed tiles often feature uneven thickness across the 600mm span, causing visible seams when laid onto T-Grids. Look for suppliers utilizing CNC-sanding calendars that guarantee a thickness tolerance within ±0.2mm.
2. Multi-Layer Coating Integrity: To prevent yellowing or water staining from overhead plumbing leaks, premium boards undergo a multi-stage water-based primer and top-coat spraying line.
3. Anti-Sag Chemical Bonding: Ensure your supplier incorporates cross-linked moisture-resistant resins into the core formulation. Standard starch-only binders soften rapidly when exposed to indoor relative humidity levels above 80%.
