Differences in Material and Structure
| Panel Type | Core Components | Structural Features |
| PVC Gypsum Board | Natural gypsum core + double/single-sided PVC film | Composite panel structure; the gypsum core provides basic strength, while the outer PVC film serves as a protective and decorative layer. |
| Traditional Gypsum Board | Natural gypsum powder + kraft paper facing | Basic layered structure; the kraft paper facing only enhances the panel's toughness without additional protective functions. |
Comparison of Key Performance
1. Moisture and Water Resistance
PVC Gypsum Board: ★★★★☆
The dense PVC film acts as a waterproof barrier, preventing water from penetrating the gypsum core. Even in humid environments such as kitchens, bathrooms and basements, it is less prone to softening and deformation (better results when paired with a moisture-proof gypsum core).
Traditional Gypsum Board: ★★☆☆☆
The kraft paper facing is vulnerable to damage and peeling when exposed to water, and the strength of the water-absorbed gypsum core drops sharply. It is only suitable for dry indoor spaces. Even moisture-proof traditional gypsum board is far inferior to PVC gypsum board in waterproof performance.
2. Fire Resistance
PVC Gypsum Board: ★★★☆☆
The gypsum core itself is a non-combustible material that absorbs heat through dehydration when exposed to fire, slowing down fire spread. However, the outer PVC film will soften and shrink at high temperatures, and some low-quality products may release a small amount of harmful gases. Its fire rating is mostly Class B1 (flame-retardant).
Traditional Gypsum Board: ★★★★☆
Without PVC film coating, the gypsum core has excellent thermal stability. It is non-combustible and does not produce toxic gases when exposed to fire, reaching a Class A (non-combustible) fire rating. Only the kraft paper facing will lose its supporting effect on the core after combustion.
3. Strength and Durability
PVC Gypsum Board: ★★★☆☆
The PVC film improves the panel's scratch resistance and aging resistance, and its impact resistance is better than that of traditional gypsum board. It is not easy to yellow or mold. However, its load-bearing capacity is moderate, so it cannot be used to hang heavy objects directly.
Traditional Gypsum Board: ★★☆☆☆
It is relatively brittle with poor impact resistance. The kraft paper facing is prone to wear and warping after long-term use, and mold may grow when damp. Its service life is relatively short.
4. Sound and Heat Insulation
PVC Gypsum Board: ★★★☆☆
It achieves basic sound and heat insulation relying on the porous structure of the gypsum core. The PVC film has little effect on this performance, and the overall performance is stable.
Traditional Gypsum Board: ★★★★☆
With higher porosity, it has slightly better sound and heat insulation effects than PVC gypsum board. However, when damp, the pores will be filled with water, leading to a sharp decline in sound and heat insulation capabilities.
Differences in Construction and Application
| Performance Dimension | PVC Gypsum Board | Traditional Gypsum Board |
|---|---|---|
| Processing Difficulty | Moderate; can be cut and drilled. Special tools are required to process the PVC film to avoid edge warping. | Easy; can be easily cut and drilled with hand tools, featuring low processing threshold. |
| Installation Method | Mainly installed on light steel keel for suspended ceilings and partition walls. The splicing joints need to be sealed to prevent film degumming. | Installed on light steel keel. After splicing, puttying, sanding and painting are required, involving more complicated procedures. |
| Surface Decorativeness | The film comes with matte, colored and other effects, and can be used directly after installation without additional decoration. | The surface is plain kraft paper facing, which requires secondary decoration such as painting and wallpaper pasting, allowing for more flexible design styles. |
| Applicable Scenarios | Humid spaces or areas with decorative requirements, such as kitchen and bathroom ceilings, living room feature walls, and office partition walls. | Suspended ceilings and partition walls in dry indoor spaces, serving as basic panels for home decoration. |
| Cost-Effectiveness | Medium to high | Low |
Differences in Environmental Friendliness
- PVC Gypsum Board: Its environmental friendliness depends on the quality of the PVC film. High-quality products use new raw materials, with formaldehyde emission meeting the E1 standard. Inferior recycled PVC film may contain plasticizers and release harmful substances in high-temperature environments.
- Traditional Gypsum Board: It is more environmentally friendly. Gypsum is a natural inorganic material, and the kraft paper facing has extremely low formaldehyde content with no peculiar smell, making it suitable for home decoration scenarios with high environmental requirements.
